I often leave for a hike at dawn - the Suunto screen is readable but the Garmin needs the backlight. The Suunto screen is easier to read in low light without having to resort to the backlight. The Garmin has more features than you'll ever use and is very customisable. Workmanlike - does the job reliably and with no frills. The Suunto Ambit3 is a more plainer, simple device. Anyway not a showstopper but annoying if you use the watch for navigating courses. It would be nice to either disable the off course alert or at least set it to only notify if more than say 50m off course. It got so bad I ended up having to disable notifications. In fact often it'll say "Off course" - then 30 seconds later "on course", then 1 minute later "Off Course" and keep on doing that. Slightly annoying - again down to GPS issues - is the Garmin's habit of telling you are "off course" when navigating a course when in fact you are definitely on-course. The Garmin can tell you that you were somewhere near the road. With the Suunto you can figure out which side of the road you were walking. Overall looking at the many hikes I've done I would say the Garmin GPS is +/-20m accuracy and the Suunto +/-3m I should mention that along that road is a 3m high bank/hedge on both sides - this may make it harder for GPS to get a signal. As you can see it does a much better job of tracking where I walked - as perfect as a consumer grade GPS can be. The second image shows the Suunto Ambit 3 Peak's track for exactly the same walk along the road. For some reason on the way back it has me in the nearby field. Image 1 is a screenshot of part of my hike using the Fenix 3 - this bit is on the road to the moors. Occasionally the Garmin is way out - as much as 20m out. I suspect its down to the aerial - I have a feeling newer Suuntos such as the Spartan Ultra with the same built in to the bezel aerial probably fare no better than the Garmin. Generally its errors are small enough not to be a show stopping issue. Garmin's is best described as "just about good enough".

Suunto's Ambit 3 GPS is absolutely excellent. Suunto said I did a 7.13 mile hike - the Garmin 7.21 miles. The actual difference in distance length was actually small though - around 1% which is nothing. Looking at the satellite images the Suunto more closely sticks to the actual path. Still not as reliable as the Suunto Ambit3 which I don't remember ever crashing.Ĭomparing the Suunto and Garmin its very obvious the Suunto has a more accurate GPS. Holding down the backlight button for 20 seconds forced a soft reset and sorted out the issue. With these bugs out of the way the Garmin has proved very reliable - just one freeze up after I uploaded a course via Garmin Basecamp.

I've had a few minor glitches - for example Garmin Connect wouldn't let me download an App because I had software version 7.3 - but in fact both the watch and Garmin Express reported it as firmware 7.6 That went back and the 2nd one thankfully worked ok! The first Garmin Fenix 3 watch I got wouldn't charge up - despite my many attempts. And for in the gym when on the indoor rower, bike or cross trainer. I use the watches mostly for hiking outdoors on Dartmoor, Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons. I "upgraded" to this from a Suunto Ambit 3 Peak.

Routebuddy review update#

I guess a firmware update has improved the track algorithm quite significantly! I walk along the same lane to get to the moors - so can easily look back and check accuracy.Īnd whereas before in Garmin connect it showed me walking at times in the field and not the road it now shows me walking on the road - as it should. Garmin seemed to change changed via the firmware the GPS track accuracy.
